In the ever-evolving landscape of the modern workplace, one statistic from Gallup’s Annual Employee Engagement Survey stands out: a staggering 70% of American employees, and 80% of employees worldwide, are disengaged at work. These disengaged employees contribute to increased absenteeism, higher turnover rates, safety incidents, diminished productivity, and the emergence of toxic workplace cultures. However, there’s a beacon of hope in the form of clarity-a key element that has been notably lacking.

The Clarity Crisis of 2023

The most significant revelation from the 2023 Gallup survey was the alarming lack of clarity within workplaces. As the survey report states, “The most concerning decline has been in the lack of clear expectations for employees across all demographic groups when comparing engagement pre-pandemic with the latest findings.” This lack of clarity is a foundational issue that affects all other aspects of employee engagement.

Gallup highlights the profound impact of this issue: “A lack of role clarity makes all other engagement elements less impactful — employees cannot perform at a high level when they are confused as to what they are supposed to do. Confused employees are more likely to look for other work and eventually leave the organization.”

Championing Clarity

You can be a champion for clarity in your organization to foster greater engagement for your entire team. Below is your guide to kick-starting a real plan for enhancing clarity within your organization.

Key Strategies to Improve Clarity

Start with these four pivotal aspects of clarity:

  1. Define Clear and Comprehensive Expectations: Employees crave clear and comprehensive expectations. Start with the top 2 or 3 processes that are most important in their role. What are the processes? Are they documented? What are the desired results or outcomes from those processes? It’s not just about telling them what to do; it’s about understanding what success looks like in their roles. Then follow up with open conversations to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding their responsibilities and objectives.
  2. Prioritize and Communicate Positively: Setting expectations shouldn’t be a punitive exercise. Instead, learn to prioritize and communicate them in a positive and empowering way. Show your employees that their contributions matter and that their work aligns with the company’s goals.
  3. Articulate Your Business’s Vision: Your employees need to know where your organization is heading. Articulate a clear vision that can serve as a guiding light for your team. When everyone understands the bigger picture, they are more likely to work cohesively and with enthusiasm.
  4. Define Your Target Customer: Understanding your target customer is crucial for aligning your efforts and resources effectively. A clearly defined target customer profile ensures that your marketing, sales, product development, and customer experience are all moving in the same direction, dramatically increasing your chances of success.

"Here’s an example for #1 -"

"Role: Front Desk at a Physical Therapist Private Practice."

"Priority 1: Schedule New Patients"

"Process: New Patient Intake Process"

"Desired Result: >80% Conversion Rate, meaning of those inbound calls, more than 4 out of 5 turn into new patients."

"Why is this process #1? Because everything else in their role and for many other roles in the organization depend on new patients arriving. Without new patients, all the other things in their job role don’t happen."

Gallup’s survey results highlight a critical issue in the world of work-a lack of clarity. By defining expectations, communicating positively, sharing your business’s vision, and identifying your target customer, you can take significant strides toward fostering engagement, boosting productivity, and building a positive workplace culture. It’s time to harness the power of clarity for a brighter and more engaged workforce. 🌟
